A Friend Indeed

Luis worked to keep his breath under control as he made his way down the shadowy alley, both to master his fear and restrain his frustration.

He glanced down at his phone, the message from his best friend Sam still glowing on the screen.

I messed up again. It's bad. Please please please help. Whatever money you have, please bring it.

The address attached had led Luis here, to this strange alleyway. Luis had sworn he was done with her catastrophes, and like always, she had sworn she was through with them. When he had gotten her message, he was close to just deleting the message.

Then the follow up message arrived.

I'm really scared.

And so, with gritting teeth, Luis had responded: I'm on my way.

The Seattle rain was coming down in force as he stepped under the awning of the run down shop front dead ending the alley. Luis ran his hand through his wet, curly hair, and looked down at the damp paper bag holding with the money he had pulled from his checking account.

Still not able to believe he was doing this, Luis stepped through the narrow wooden door. The place smelled of incense, coffee, and old books. As his eyes adjusted to the low light, he saw a disorganized maze of bookshelves running across two levels. In the corner was a wooden counter where an older man reclined in a chair, reading a well-worn paperback.

Confused, Luis checked his phone, checking and double checking that he had the right address. "Excuse me," he said, finally. The man looked up at him, his eyes wrinkling with his affable grin.

"What can I do for you, young man?"

Luis looked around nervously. "I'm, uh, not sure, exactly. Maybe? I'm looking for Sam?"

"Oh, sure. She's in back." The man nodded and pointed up the stairs. "Head up there, head to the far end. Through the door, end of the hallway. Can't miss it."

Luis stared at the man. "I'm sorry. Has she, I mean, did she steal some books here?" His eyes glanced around, finding no other patrons and hearing nothing aside from some crooning jazz from a nearby stereo. "Are you, like a collector or something?"

The old man gave him an appraising look, his fingers tapping the spine of his book. "Your friend seems nice enough," he said. "Dumb, though. Real dumb. You should probably hurry."

Luis stared at the man in confusion, but he had already gone back to his book. With nothing else to do, Luis took a breath to steel himself and headed up the stairs. Past the winding bookshelves, he found a large metal door, one considerably more secure looking than the creaky wooden one out front.

The hall inside was cleaner, the smoothed tile reflecting the warm light from above. He passed doors on either side, and occasionally he heard noises, muffled voices in conversation or laughter or, occasionally, what sounded like moans.

"What the fuck have you done this time, Sam?" Luis wondered aloud as he approached the end of the hallway. He stepped gingerly to the door, and as he reached for the knob, a voice, unfamiliar and feminine, said simply, "It's open."

Luis's heart raced as he stepped inside. What he found looked to be a strange amalgamation of office and bedroom. A wide desk sat against the wall, covered in papers with a small laptop; a small filing cabinet stood near it. Across the room from the desk was a large bed, a chair, and a small couch. A beautiful woman in tight shorts and a t-shirt sat in the chair, her crystal blue eyes clear to Luis even from the door. Her chestnut brown hair hung just above her shoulders, and an intricate snake tattoo running from her ankle to disappear up past her thigh.

A wide, sly smile spread across her face. "Why look, Samantha. It's your knight in shining armor."

It was only then that Luis saw the others in the low-lit room. Two men sat on the couch with attentive expressions turned towards him. One was white and the other Asian, and both had similarly athletic builds. Sitting on the bed was Sam. She was looking at him expectantly with her cap and hoodie on, her baggy jeans loose on her hips.

"I told you he'd come, Lexie," Sam said, a nervous lilt in her voice. She rose and ran to him, clasping him tightly to herself.

Sam was a tomboy through and through, but pressed against Luis he could still feel her firm, pert breasts press against him, could feel her heart beating fast in her chest. "What's going on, Sam?" he said in a low voice.

"I fucked up," she said in a small voice. "Bad."

Luis looked up at the woman she had called Lexie. Despite her casual clothes, she had a commanding aura. Her slight smile belied the calm power in her eyes.

"What happened?" Luis said, trying to match the woman's gaze, and failing.

The woman languidly stretched her arms above her head. It made her generous breasts strain against the thin fabric of her shirt. The impressions of two tiny barbell piercings outlined on the cloth as she did. "Why don't you tell him, Samantha? I could use a good laugh."

Sam pressed in tighter to Luis for a second before drawing away. He could see the embarrassment in her eyes, the tension on her defined jawline. "So... yeah. Probably a bad time to bring this up, but I... uh, I've been selling drugs for Lexie here for a few weeks now."

Luis's mouth fell open. "What?"

"They're not bad!" she blurted, her voice quavering slightly. "It doesn't hurt anybody. It just helps you feel good."

Lexie chuckled and leaned back in her chair.. "That's one way of putting it."

Her voice made Sam's head droop slightly. "It was going well, you know?" She gave a nervous laugh. "It's, it's called 'Heaven,' the drug, I mean. People love it!"

Luis frowned. "'Heaven?' Isn't that the new rave drug? Like ecstasy or something?"

When Lexie said nothing, Sam shrugged. "Maybe? I don't know. I've never taken it. It's just something I sell, you know?"

Luis nodded. "Ok. Then what's the problem?" His eyes fell to the damp paper bag full of cash he was holding. "Why did I have to bring this?"

"Yes, Sam," Lexie said, obviously enjoying herself. "Why did he to bring that?"

Sam swallowed. "Like I said... I fucked up. Someone I sold to regularly, he said he knew how to cut it. He said we could sell the extra and keep split the money, you know?"

"But when I gave him the stuff," she said, her hands fidgeting, "He... he kind of just disappeared."

Luis shook his head and sighed. "Oh, fuck. Sam..."

She gave him a despondent smile. "Like I said. I fucked up bad."

Lexie rose from her chair. "Yes. Yes, you did." She walked towards them, her hips swaying lightly as she walked. "Best-case scenario, you would have hurt my reputation. But with everything gone, you just flat out stole from me." She rested her hand on Sam's shoulder, making her shiver. "Not a good look, girlfriend."

Luis felt his teeth clench with a mix of fear and frustration. It was as if every time he bailed her out of one mess, she wound up in a bigger one. But this was on a different level altogether.

Finally, with a resigned sigh, Luis held out the bag. "Will this account for it?"

Lexie plucked the bag from his hand. She glanced down into the bag and laughed. "Oh, that's cute," she said, tossing the bag on the coffee table. "And not even close to covering what she owes."

Luis felt his stomach lurch. "All right. What now, then?"

He felt Sam's hand tighten around his. When Lexie saw his expression, she rolled her eyes. "Relax. This isn't a mob movie. My boys aren't going to break your friend's legs or anything. She just has to work off her debt, is all. It's what we were discussing before you arrived."

Luis frowned, looking down at her friend. "What is she talking about?"

"Well," Sam hesitated before furtively meeting his gaze. "Lexie doesn't just sell this drug."

Luis looked at the smiling, brown-haired woman. He suddenly realized what the sounds he heard were when he was walking through the hallway. The moans. The soft cries.

"You make porn."

"What can I say," she said with a smile. "I'm a Renaissance woman."

Sam hesitated. "She, uh, said if I made a video for her, it would take care of my debt."

"You can't be serious, Sam." Luis leaned in close to her. "She can't expect you to do this. You've never even had sex!"

"I don't have much of a choice," she mumbled, gesturing to Lexie. "And she... Yeah, she knows. It actually made things easier, she said."

"Yep," Lexie said, casually examining her fingernails. "It was going to have to be a series before she told me that. First-time videos do crazy well."

She looked up at Luis, a dark glint in her eyes. "Especially when it's two of them."

Luis took a step back. "What?"

Sam bit her lip. "I might have let slip that you were a virgin, too."

"Wait..." Luis's eyes slowly grew wide. Glancing up, the cameras mounted to the wall he assumed were for security took on a whole new meaning. "What... what are you saying?"

Still grinning, Lexie said, "Little Samantha is saying that she agreed to have sex with you on camera if I agreed to let her off the hook."

Luis's breath caught in his throat. "This is what you asked me here for? What about the money?"

Sam shrugged. "I mean, if you'd have had enough..."

"No." Luis said, shaking his head. "No. I'm not doing this, Sam. This is—This is too fucking much."

He tried to back away, but Sam held onto his hand, her eyes pleading. "Luis, listen. If it isn't like this, I'll have to do a bunch of these videos to pay her back. And it'll be rough." She gestured with a shaking hand behind her to the two men on the couch. "I'll have to fuck those guys. Both at once."

Luis looked at the two men relaxing on the couch, their expressions ones of those vaguely bored by everything.

"To be fair," Lexie said, her chin resting on her hand as she watched the two of them. "My boys are professionals. Little Samantha will be safe. But, you know, we still have to make things interesting..."

"Speaking of interesting, Lex," the Asian man said. "Could we get this worked out? Me and Jake have other shit we could do, ya know?"

"With all due respect, Ken," Lexie said, "The only thing you two would be doing is each other. Just sit back and enjoy the show."

Ken rolled his eyes, but his friend laughed, poking him playfully in the side.

"So what's it going to be?" Lexie said, turning back to the two of them. "Are we making a video of best friends coming together to learn the true joys of physical intimacy?" She paused, her gaze lingering on Sam. "Or do we make the first of a series I think I'll call 'Turning Out the Tomboy?'"

Sam shuddered at this, and looked pleadingly at Luis. "Please, Luis? It'll be so, so much easier with you." She smiled sheepishly. "You can think of it as payback for all the times you've had to help me..."

Luis sighed, staring at the floor as he thought.

"I just..." he sighed. "I wouldn't even know what I'd be doing."

"That's what I'll be there for," Lexie said cheerfully. "I'll be happy to guide you both along. Every step of the way."

Luis stared at the woman. Her expression as he looked at them was something more than greed. Her red lips glistened in the light, her pierced nipples pressing hard against her shirt.

Luis realized in that moment that this wasn't about money for this woman. It was about her own personal enjoyment. She wanted to watch them have sex. Wanted to make them lose their virginities to each other.

And his only options were to go through with it, or leave his friend to a harsher fate.

With a last look in Sam's hopeful eyes, Luis's head fell. "All right. Fine. I'll do it."

"A supportive friend to the very end," Lexie said, rising from her chair. "Lets get you two ready, shall we?"
